March 2026 Brixham C of E Primary School attend St Mary’s Brixham for the commissioning of their headteacher, Mrs. Jenny Stewart. |
St Mary’s is the oldest of the churches in Brixham, dating from c. 1450 in the area known locally as ‘Cowtown’. This was the heart of the former agricultural settlement, as distinct from ‘Fishtown’, the area around the harbour.
St Mary's holds regular services on Sundays (8.45 and 11 .00am) and Wednesdays (10.30am). We have a group of servers, chalice assistants and Bible readers for all the services, along with intercessors and a very committed choir and organist at 11:00am. The choir also sings at weddings and funerals when requested. Talented flower-arrangers provide displays for all church festivals and Sunday services. There is a committed bell-ringing team.
The Community
Within the church grounds is the church hall, used for meetings and to hire for community events. The Social Committee arranges further events there including Harvest supper, pancake lunch, barbecues, cream teas and various fund-raising events.
Mission and giving is an important part of the life at St Mary’s, which, along with the other churches in the Brixham Mission Community, raises money for Christian Aid, the Fishermen’s Mission and other charities.
Eden Park County Primary school is very close to St Mary’s. The church is used for their Christmas Carol Services and many Eden Park children attend Messy Church.
Other information
St Mary’s has an active PCC, meeting six times a year with a number of sub-committees which meet as required. The PCC regularly pays the full contribution to the Diocesan Common Fund.
We are currently in the process of a reordering project to conserve our tower, rework our welcoming and servery area, also the children’s area, and then add additional toilets; this will then enable us to meet today’s ever-increasing demands on our building. We host regular services throughout the church year including Civic Services for Remembrance and many funerals.
St Mary's is now the official collection point for the Mission Community Shoebox Appeal which supports Christian Response to
Eastern Europe (Cr2EE). We have been collecting shoeboxes for many years and the number of shoeboxes collected has increased year on year. This is an amazing demonstration of outward love shown to people that we don't know, all done in Jesus's name.
St Mary’s is the only burial ground in Brixham and is the second largest churchyard in Devon. It is now closed for fresh burial plots but we can still accommodate ashes plots. The churchyard is now maintained by
